Case Study: Bespoke Lifting Equipment for Theme Park Log Flume Maintenance

by | Apr 2, 2024 | Case Study

At Bramley Engineering, we’re no strangers to tackling unique challenges in the lifting industry. With over 40 years of experience under our belt, we’ve seen it all. So when a renowned UK theme park approached us with a maintenance puzzle nestled within their beloved log flume ride, we were eager to dive in.

The Challenge

The log flume ride, a cherished staple of amusement parks, relies on hefty rollers to propel its boats up steep inclines, creating those heart-pounding moments before the thrilling descent. But maintaining these rollers posed a considerable challenge. Positioned on a tricky upward slope, their removal for maintenance was no easy feat and carried significant safety risks for the maintenance crew. And as a committed member of the LEEA, we were keen to put that right.

Crafting Bespoke Lifting Equipment

Our mission was clear: devise a lifting solution that could safely and efficiently manage the removal and replacement of these hefty rollers. It was a task that demanded both precision and creativity. So, we set to work.

Our Bespoke Solution

We designed a bespoke mobile gantry system, tailor-made to navigate the unique terrain of the log flume ride. The mobile gantry has been fabricated with casters along the base, and either side of the base to prevent unwanted lateral movement on it’s assent/descent. This mobile gantry could then be raised and lowered from the top of the slope to be positioned precisely over the individual rollers that needed lifting. A lifting device (such as a chain block) can be mounted to the mobile gantry to perform the lifting operation.

But here’s where it gets really interesting – we employed state-of-the-art 3D scanning technology to map out the area above the slope with pinpoint accuracy. This allowed us to create a fixed anchor point for the winch – using the pre-existing fittings of the ride itself –  ensuring our mobile gantry could be securely positioned (using the winch on the fixed anchor point) over the rollers, eliminating any risk of slippage or misalignment during the lift. This fixed anchor point also doubled as a safety barrier for the winch operator whilst at the top of the slope.

Making a Splash: Client Impact

Our custom lifting solution didn’t just meet expectations; it exceeded them. The log flume roller removal lifting device has revolutionised the maintenance process for our client, providing a safe, reliable, and repeatable method for keeping the ride in top-notch condition.

The feedback from the theme park speaks volumes. Their maintenance team now enjoys a lifting solution that not only enhances safety but also slashes the time and effort required for essential maintenance tasks.

In Conclusion

Our bespoke “Log Flume Roller Removal Maintenance Lifting Device” is a testament to our commitment to innovation, safety, and efficiency.
