Bramley Engineering recently tackled a unique and challenging project: designing a lifting solution for circular transformers on passenger trains for a train maintenance facility in Northamptonshire. These transformers, essential for train operations, required regular maintenance, but their shape, weight, and placement posed significant transportation challenges.
The Lifting Challenge
The primary challenge was the circular shape of the transformers, making them difficult to lift and manoeuvre. Located on top of passenger trains, safely removing and replacing these heavy and expensive units was a critical task. Traditional lifting methods were not only inefficient but also posed safety risks to facility operatives. The risk of dropping these vital components was unacceptable, given their value and importance.
Our Bespoke Solution
Bramley Engineering’s innovative approach led to the creation of a specialised piece of lifting equipment. This equipment operates using a scissor-like motion, securely enclosing the transformer for safe lifting. The design ensures that the mechanism never fully collapses, eliminating the risk of finger entrapment and maximising operator safety.
Each arm of the lifting claw features upstands, enhancing the stability of the load and preventing any tipping during transport. A unique aspect of this design is the inclusion of rollers on the underside of each arm. These rollers part upon impact with the ground, smoothly releasing the load at the desired location.
