A Goliath Crane – sometimes referred to as a Portal Crane – is a form of overhead traveling crane that runs along floor rails rather than elevated rails. The overhead beam and supporting structure (gantry) are one unit, that travel back and forth on floor-mounted rails. A combined hoist and trolley are attached to the overhead beam. This allows the hoist to travel along the traveling beam perpendicular to the floor rails allowing access to the target lift anywhere within the floor rails.

Goliath Cranes are ideal for outdoor settings when a overhead travelling crane is required, or when it is not possible to couple overhead runway beams with a buildings support structure. Commonly used on contructions sites, ports and harbours, or on projects when the entire crane needs to be relocated to another location. Goliath cranes are also an ideal solution for providing a large lifting area whilst minimising the impact on floor space required for a fixed gantry.
